Why we cry when we do April 20, 2009

No one is an idiot to keep sobbing all their life. Though you know many of them who do cry at the drop of a hat, most have a reason and most of them ARE valid.

The reason i am doing this is cos no one likes to bawl like a toddler but we do and more so often without our knowledge or control.. why? Dunno! I don’t either and i don’t know if i want to find out.. but what i DID want to find out was , what is crying? ( the usual thing of mine, a need to google things!) and so i did! And this is what i landed upon…

“The term crying
commonly refers to the act of shedding tears as a response to an emotional state in humans.

A neuronal connection between the tear duct and the areas of the human brain involved with emotion was established. No other animals are thought to produce tears in response to emotional states, although this is disputed by some scientists.

According to a study of over 300 adults, on average, men cry once every month, and women cry at least five times per month. In many cultures, it is more socially acceptable for women and children to cry than with men.

Not only this but also this -

“There are three different types of cries apparent in infants. The first of these three is a Basic Cry which is a systematic cry with a pattern of crying and silence. The basic cry starts with a cry coupled with a briefer silence, this is followed by a short high pitched inspiratory whistle, then there is a brief silence followed by another cry.  An Anger Cry is much like the basic cry, however in this cry more excess air is forced through the vocal chords, making it a louder more abrupt cry. The third cry is the Pain Cry which unlike the other two has no preliminary moaning. The pain cry is one loud cry followed by a period of breath holding.”

Actually i wouldn’t just apply this to infants… it applies to any normal human being as well. As for me, I don’t belong to this category largely. My tolerance to pain is high so i don’t cry when in pain. Yes, I do cry when hungry but that’s step 2.I don’t know basic crying entirely but i know this – i cry when something that’s a small yet terribly important part of my life goes wrong. This could range from someone making fun of me to me just not doing my one day’s show well!

Why am i talking about this? Cos to this someone that i know i cry quite often… from things that are petty to real serious things.. but the person still wonders why i cry! Boys think that way and i hate to hear that! Crying is NOT a girl’s thing!Men cry too, just lesser probably! Though in a year (according to an article i came across) women cry about 64 times a year whereas men cry as little as 17! seems less to me! well anyway the point is we are in a world where crying is a sign of weakness..

Crying beyond your 5th year is a big tch tch! what nonsense! If  i couldn’t cry when i was teased by my friends in school for my first pimple just cos i was a guy, I don’t want to be a guy! If i cant cry when someone bloody close to me leaves, then i don’t way to be a guy! If i cant cry cos my favourite team lost then i don’t want to be a guy! If i cant cry when my girlfriend leaves me then i don’t want to be a guy! If i cant cry when you make fun of my emotions then i don’t want to be a guy… If i need to wait for someone to die to cry, then i don’t want to be a guy!

The point is not whether its the men or the women who cry.. i feel crying is just letting out of emotions.. its like anger or happiness… i am expressing myself when i cry… i am not an idiot to cry at the drop of a hat… so when i cry don’t say u don’t like it… try and just let me come out with it!

We cry when we cant find the right words to say how we feel, elated or sad.. for those silent moments a tear holds good… or so i feel!
